7 celebrity divorces that dragged on for years
The divorce process can be easy and accomplished in a matter of months, without any problems for both parties. It can also be quite stressful, especially when it comes to fighting over money and custody of the child. Just think of what celebs must experience sometimes. It is especially difficult when you are working in Hollywood because there are millions of dollars at stake, plus teams of top-quality lawyers on each side are hell-bent on making sure their clients get the best settlements. Thus, it is no surprise that it could be many years before the separation process turns out to be official. Take a look at eight couples with divorces that haven’t become legal in years.
Maria Shriver & Arnold Schwarzenegger
The two were once probably the strongest celeb couple in the world. Ah-nold is maybe the all-time biggest action star, whilst Maria is part of the Kennedy dynasty. However, the former governor and Maria were in turmoil behind the scenes. As it turns out, the actor was cheating his wife with his housekeeper and their kid was being kept the secret from literally everyone! Maria was not too happy and promptly asked for a divorce. After almost ten years, the two are still technically married, and there is no ending in sight.
Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon
In 2008, after 1.5 months of dating, Carey and Cannon decided to get married. By 2014, their marriage was actually consummated, but Nick refused to officially divorce because of traditional disagreements in such cases. She was engaged to James Packer, who was a good choice for Cary in her opinion at the time. The celeb couple was finally able to come to an agreement that suited them both only in 2016, a month after Carey canceled her engagement to an Australian.
Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
When their separation was announced in 2016, it came as a shock to the whole world. Of course, there was the very incident on the plane in which Brad acted aggressively against his kids. Though the actor denies it, Jolie quickly responded and filed for divorce. Although these celebrities officially became singles only in 2019.
Fergie & Josh Duhamel
In 2009, the actor and Fergie were married and supposedly enjoyed 8 years of loveliness and blissful unity before it ended. Was it actually over, though? No. It was two more years – 2019, to be precise before the singer officially applied for a divorce. The process moved relatively quickly. By November of the same year, the case was resolved.
Khloe Kardashian & Lamar Odom
The story of their divorce is as crazy as their union. The celeb, who was lucky enough to be born with the Kardashian surname, and the problematic ex-NBA player “enjoyed” a highly turbulent marriage, underscored by Lamar’s infidelity and drug abuse. Thus, it perhaps came as no big surprise by the time Khloe filed for divorce in 2009, filing split’ papers in 2013. He eventually signed it eighteen months afterward, but because the court system in Los Angeles was slow-moving, the judge appointed in the case couldn’t get a deal done. Next, when Odom almost passed away from a drug overdose, Khloe requested that the divorce petition be dismissed so that she might help him improve. As soon as he did it, she immediately refilled it. The divorce became legal in 2016, about 3 years after the initial filing.
Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck
The 30th of June in 2015 was a shameful day. Not exactly. It was simply the day when Garner with Affleck declared their divorce after ten years of being married. Nevertheless, it was taking a while to get it officially pronounced because Ben had been dealing with his alcohol problems, meanwhile Jennifer did not want the split to go on until he had sobered up. They ended up finalizing their divorce only in October 2018.
Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin
The singer and actress were married in 2003 as soon as they had babies. In 2013, they quietly broke up, and a year later they declared their “conscious separation.” The divorce process has taken about 2 years. But it’s not still okay. Actually, when Paltrow remarried to television writer Brad Falchuk and Martin went on a honeymoon with them.
